What do Foster carers do?

Care for children

 

  • Provide the day-to-day care and establish a stable and safe routine.
  • Have the capacity to develop warm and trusting relationships with children.
  • Accept a child even when they may reject you.
  • Include the child in every aspect of family life, they are important and matter.
  • Balance nurturing care with appropriate boundaries.
  • Keep children safe from harm and teach them how to keep themselves safe.
  • Be there, even when things are difficult.
  • Spend time, listen and let them know you will advocate for them.
  • Encourage and support children’s education, achievements and ambitions.
  • Promote emotional and physical health and development.

Work as part of a team

 

  • Work alongside your supervising social worker in supporting the child’s placement.
  • Be willing to ask for help.
  • Work as part of a professional team, communicate with and keep up-to-date.
  • Attend and contribute to meetings; including a child’s review, case conference, Personal Education Plans etc and carry out agreed tasks.
  • Promote contact with birth family and friends in line with the child’s care plan.
  • Develop a good support network of those you can call upon to assist.
  • Keep clear and up-to-date recordings and complete/ contribute to written reports.

Own development

 

  • Make a commitment to your continued learning.
  • Attend training and undertake a wide range of learning and development opportunities.
  • Attend and contribute to support groups.
  • Use supervision and your foster carer review as an opportunity to learn and grow.
